Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon this spot in Braddon last time I was in Canberra – it’s called the 1 Bed Luxury Braddon Unit, tucked away at 415/42 Mort Street. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I rolled up after a long drive from Sydney, but pulling into that quiet side of Mort Street felt like a breath of fresh air. Braddon’s got this vibe, right? It’s that hip inner-north suburb where the coffee roasters and craft breweries spill out onto the sidewalks, and you’re just a quick stroll from the city center without all the parliamentary hustle. Check-in was a breeze – no fuss at the front desk, just a code for the door and a welcome pack with local tips, which was handy because I arrived late and didn’t want to deal with people. The building itself is modern but not flashy, with that clean, minimalist Canberra aesthetic – think polished concrete floors that echo a bit when you walk in, and big windows letting in that crisp morning light. Oh, and parking? They have secure spots underground, which is a godsend in this area where street parking turns into a nightmare during peak hours, like when everyone’s hitting up the markets on weekends.

What really sold me on the place was sinking into that king-sized bed after a day wandering around – the unit’s got this luxurious feel without trying too hard, you know? It’s a one-bedroom setup, so perfect if you’re solo or with a partner, with a full kitchen that actually has decent appliances (I whipped up a quick brekkie using stuff from the nearby IGA on Lonsdale Street – their fresh produce is always spot-on). The living area opens up to a balcony overlooking Mort Street, and let me tell you, the evening sounds of distant chatter from the bars on Elouera Street filter in gently, not obnoxiously – though if you’re a light sleeper, pack earplugs for those rowdier Friday nights when Braddon’s party crowd spills over. Sensory-wise, it’s all about that fresh linen smell mixed with whatever’s brewing from the cafes below; I mean, waking up to the aroma of single-origin coffee wafting up is basically a free perk. Amenities are solid for a 4-star – fast Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch during my Zoom calls, a washer-dryer combo which saved me from hunting down a laundromat, and even a little gym downstairs if you’re into that (I skipped it, but it looked well-equipped). One minor gripe: the bathroom’s sleek with rain shower and all, but the water pressure dipped a tad during busy mornings – nothing deal-breaking, just something to note if you’re rushing for an early Lake Burley Griffin walk.

All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for a mix of work and play – say, checking out the National Gallery or just chilling in one of the suburb’s hidden wine bars – this unit’s a smart pick. It’s got that 8.4 rating for a reason: comfortable, well-located, and feels like a home base rather than a sterile hotel room. I stayed there in autumn, when the leaves on the plane trees along Mort turn golden, and it was quiet mid-week but buzzed on weekends – timing it right makes all the difference. Would I go back? Absolutely, especially at that price point; it’s luxury without the pretension, and honestly, in a city like Canberra where everything’s spread out, being smack in Braddon means you’re never far from a great meal or a decent park run. Just watch out for those construction noises popping up occasionally – the area’s always evolving, after all.

Reviews

  • Excellent unit in a good location – Rudy from Australia – 6 December 2024 (8/10)

    The location

What could be improved: Shower floor is very slippery

  • Overall I liked the unit. It was in a great location, and I loved the underground secure car park. – Jill from Australia – 20 June 2025 (8/10)

Loved the location of this unit. It was clean and safe with underground parking. It was a quiet spot for a good location. Would be very nice in spring and summer when you can open windows. Nice light and outlook.

What could be improved: Although there was a wifi code and password, the wifi could not be accessed and when I sent a message to my contact about accessing the internet, I could not get in touch, nor did they answer my messages. The building halls had a funny smell, but the unit was fine. Also the lockbox I got the keys from had an extremely hard lockbox inside the first lockbox. It was hard to see the code and very hard to access for me anyway. If I’m being picky the white towels were not a good standard or all that white, so I would bring my own towel next time.

  • Very good – Kerry from Australia – 10 June 2025 (8/10)

Fantastic location for restaurants, bars and shopping. Car parking was essential.

What could be improved: We were only provided with 2 bath towels and no hand towel and no face washers for a one week stay. The couch was a bit uncomfortable but ok.

  • Very good – Andrew from Australia – 27 February 2025 (8/10)

Only complaint is the curtains allow the morning sun in very early. The Bedroom small window has no curtain or blind at all.

  • Quiet, clean and modern. Perfect stay. – Nicole from Australia – 8 February 2025 (10/10)

Clean, quiet, spacious. Everything we needed. Close to Civic and many cafes etc

    What could be improved: Nothing

  • Loved it cant wait to stay again next year – Jason from Australia – 9 January 2025 (10/10)

    Loved it perfect for us

What could be improved: Couch was a little uncomfortable but hardly sat on it anyway

  • Need to buy own essentials – Scott from Australia – 2 November 2024 (4/10)

Dishwasher not working, has a coffee machine butbno milk and no coffee.
The liquid soap in the shower was watered down. No washing machine liquid.

What could be improved: Good location

  • The place was dirty management don't care. Its all about doing things on the cheap. – Wharton from Australia – 11 March 2025 (1/10)

    The location was okay.

What could be improved: The sheets on the bed had not been changed from the previous people who stayed there. they had a blood stain and other bodily stains on them they were filthy. We complained to the host who asked the cleaners to change the sheets. The cleaners gave us an old, stained sheet and an old torn doona cover as replacements. When we showed pictures of these to the host management, we were finally given clean linen which we had to put on the bed ourselves. Everything is done on the cheap. From spot cleans to watered down liquid soap in the bathroom to no milk in fridge to no brand coffee. The balcony had spider webs have had been there a long time, it had not been cleaned. The place needs to be inspected more often by management as the cleaners are not doing their job.
