Hotel Description

You know, when I rolled into Canberra last spring, I wasn’t expecting much from a place called 2B-1BR-1Car-Courtyard-CBD-Shops – sounds more like a real estate listing than a hotel, right? But honestly, it turned out to be this underrated gem right on Cooyong Street in the heart of the CBD. I drove up after a long haul from Sydney, and parking was a breeze – they’ve got that dedicated car spot included, which is gold in a city where street parking can be a nightmare, especially around rush hour when everyone’s piling out of the government offices nearby. Check-in was straightforward; no fancy lobby or anything, just a quick key handover from the manager who actually lives on-site (nice touch, made it feel more like crashing at a mate’s place than some sterile chain). The building’s got this low-key vibe, tucked away from the main drag but close enough to wander over to Braddon’s hip cafes – think Lonsdale Street with its brunch spots and craft beer joints. I mean, I grabbed a flat white from that little roastery just a block away, and it hit the spot after dealing with the airport traffic.

Stepping inside the unit – it’s basically a one-bedroom apartment with two beds squeezed in somehow, plus a full kitchen and that little courtyard out back – it felt surprisingly homey for a 3-star spot. The decor’s nothing flashy, sort of modern-minimal with those IKEA-esque touches, but clean as a whistle, and the bed was comfy enough that I slept like a log despite the occasional hum from the street below (Cooyong can get a bit noisy in the evenings with folks heading to the bars, but it quiets down by 10 pm). I loved having the courtyard – tiny, yeah, but perfect for sipping a morning tea while listening to the birds and smelling that fresh eucalyptus from the nearby parks. Practical-wise, the bathroom’s compact but functional, with decent water pressure and those little toiletries that don’t scream “budget.” And get this: it’s steps from the light rail stop on Northbourne Avenue, so hopping over to Lake Burley Griffin for a walk or even the War Memorial was effortless – I did that one afternoon when the cherry blossoms were out, and it was magical. Oh, and if you’re into shopping, the Canberra Centre’s basically around the corner, though I wish they’d stocked the kitchen with better coffee pods; the ones provided were a bit meh.

All in all, if you’re hitting Canberra for work or a quick getaway – say, during the Floriade festival when the city’s buzzing but not overwhelming – this place is a solid pick without breaking the bank. It’s got that 8.5 rating for a reason: practical, well-located, and with enough space to spread out if you’re traveling with a partner or a kid. Sure, it’s not luxurious (no pool or gym, and the Wi-Fi can lag during peak times), but for what it is, it feels authentic to the laid-back Canberra scene. I’d go back in a heartbeat – just pack your own snacks if you’re a foodie, because while the shops are close, the in-room options are basic. Trust me, it’s the kind of spot that makes you appreciate the little things, like not having to fight for a parking spot after a day exploring the capital.
