Tucked away on Burbury Close in Barton, it’s in that leafy part of town right near Parliament House – you can actually stroll over to the Old Parliament House gardens in about 10 minutes if you’re into that historical vibe. I mean, Barton’s not the flashiest suburb, but it’s got this quiet charm, especially in the evenings when the bureaucrats head home and the streets empty out. Parking was a breeze – they have undercover spots that don’t cost an arm and a leg, which is a godsend in Canberra where everything seems to revolve around government plates and paid lots. Check-in was smooth, too; the staff were friendly without being over-the-top, and they even pointed me toward a great little coffee spot on nearby Brisbane Avenue for my morning fix.

What really sold me on the Burbury, though – and this is coming from someone who’s stayed in way too many bland business hotels – is how it blends that boutique feel with practical touches that make you want to linger. Oh, and speaking of the spa, I squeezed in a quick massage after hiking around Lake Burley Griffin (which is just a short walk away via Telopea Park – pro tip: go at sunset for those pink skies reflecting on the water). The place isn’t huge, so it stays pretty quiet at night; no thumping bass from a bar downstairs or anything like that. Sure, the Wi-Fi could be snappier in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but it’s reliable enough for work calls.

All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for a mix of culture and downtime – maybe catching an exhibit at the National Gallery or just wandering the paths around the lake – the Burbury’s a smart pick. It’s not the cheapest option (rooms start around $250 a night in peak season, like during Floriade in September when the flowers are blooming everywhere), but you get that sense of being in a real neighborhood, not some tourist trap. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially for a solo trip or with a partner – families might find it a bit too sleek and compact, but for everyone else?
