Hotel Description

You know, when I first pulled up to the Capital Country Holiday Park on Bidges Road in Sutton, just a quick 20-minute drive north of Canberra, I was honestly surprised by how peaceful it felt right away. I’d been buzzing around the city all day—dodging traffic near Parliament House and grabbing a coffee in Braddon—and suddenly, here I was in this wide-open spot surrounded by gum trees and rolling paddocks. It’s not your flashy resort or anything; it’s more like a laid-back holiday park with cabins, powered sites for vans, and even some tent spots if you’re into that. I mean, the check-in was super straightforward—no fuss, just a friendly chat with the staff who handed over the keys and pointed out the best spots for spotting kangaroos at dusk. Parking’s a breeze too; plenty of space right by your cabin, which is great if you’re hauling gear like I was. And the smell? That fresh eucalyptus hit mixed with a hint of campfire smoke—it’s the kind of thing that makes you exhale and think, okay, this is Australia proper.

What really made it special for me was how it balances that outback vibe with enough comforts to keep things easy, especially if you’re traveling with kids or just wanting a break from the urban grind. The cabins are basic but cozy—think sturdy wooden floors that creak a bit underfoot, a small kitchenette where I whipped up some brekkie eggs, and verandas perfect for sipping a cold one while watching the sunset over the hills. There’s a pool that’s a lifesaver in summer (gets busy around school holidays, though, so heads up), and BBQ areas scattered around that encourage those impromptu gatherings with other travelers. I remember one evening hearing kookaburras laughing in the trees—it was magical, honestly, and way quieter than staying in central Canberra where the traffic hum never really stops. Sure, it’s only rated an 8 and three stars, so don’t expect spa treatments or room service; the bathrooms could use a fresh coat of paint here and there, and if it’s peak season like during the Floriade festival, book early because it fills up with families escaping the city crowds. But that’s part of its charm—it’s authentic, you know? A solid base for day trips back to spots like Lake Burley Griffin or the wineries in nearby Hall, without the hassle of inner-city parking woes.

All in all, if you’re after a no-frills spot to unwind and connect with nature while still being close enough to Canberra’s action—say, for a weekend getaway or even a longer stay exploring the capital—I’d totally recommend it. It’s affordable, welcoming, and left me feeling recharged, sort of like a hidden gem locals whisper about. Just pack some insect repellent for those summer evenings, and you’ll be set. • Will definitely keep it in mind for future Canberra trips. – Matthew from Australia – 29 April 2025 (8/10)

It was inexpensive, close to Canberra yet not in Canberra, so it felt like being out in the country, but only a short drive to shops and attractions.

What could be improved: One of the showers didn’t work. The other one did though, so it was OK.

  • Could have stayed longer – Lorraine from Australia – 9 February 2025 (9/10)

Not the first time we have stayed at Capital Country Park, but first time in the Bungalows. Great cabin with room for family of four (2 adult children). Beds comfy and clean, cabin neat & tidy. Aircon & fans worked well. Great shower water pressure. A few more powerpoints would be handy.

  • Comfortable, easy to find and the kids were well occupied. – Leanne from Australia – 9 January 2025 (9/10)
