Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Century 23 Griffith during a quick trip to Canberra last spring – I was there for a conference but ended up extending my stay just to explore the area a bit more. It’s tucked away on Cunningham Street in Griffith, this leafy suburb that’s honestly one of the nicer parts of the city. Not too far from Manuka Oval if you’re into sports (I caught a local cricket match nearby, which was a fun surprise), and it’s just a short drive or even a pleasant walk to Lake Burley Griffin for those morning jogs or sunset picnics. Pulling up, the place has this understated modern vibe – not flashy, but clean lines and a welcoming entrance that doesn’t scream “tourist trap.” Check-in was a breeze; the staff were chatty without being overbearing, and they even tipped me off about a great little cafe down the street for breakfast – think fresh croissants and decent coffee, which is a godsend after a long flight.
What really sold me on it, though, was the rooms – I had one on the upper floor with a balcony overlooking some quiet residential streets, and let me tell you, the bed was like sinking into a cloud after a day of traipsing around Parliament House (which is only about 10 minutes away by car, by the way). The decor’s sort of contemporary Australian – timber accents, neutral tones, and those little touches like a proper coffee machine that actually works, not one of those pod things that spit out weak brew. I mean, the bathroom was spacious with rainfall showers that made mornings feel luxurious, and the air con hummed quietly without that annoying rattle you get in some places. Parking’s easy too; they’ve got secure spots right out front, which is handy in Canberra where street parking can be a nightmare during peak hours. Oh, and it’s pretty quiet at night – Griffith isn’t party central, so no rowdy crowds, but if you’re a light sleeper, you might hear the occasional car on Cunningham in the mornings. Honestly, the only minor gripe was the Wi-Fi; it was solid for streaming, but it dipped a bit during evenings when everyone logs on – nothing a quick reset couldn’t fix, though. Food-wise, they have a small on-site bistro that’s decent for a casual dinner (try the lamb – it’s got that fresh, herby flavor from local suppliers), but I preferred wandering to nearby spots like the Griffith shops for some authentic eats.
All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra and want something that’s not right in the chaotic heart of the city but close enough to everything – think easy access to the National Gallery or even a day trip to the wineries out in the hills – Century 23 is a solid pick. It’s got that 4-star comfort without feeling stuffy, and with an 8/10 rating floating around, it lives up to the hype for business travelers or couples like me who just want a relaxed base. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in autumn when the leaves turn and the whole suburb feels like a postcard. Just book ahead during Floriade season; things get busy then, and you don’t want to miss out on those balcony views.
