Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Dana – it’s this private room in a shared duplex apartment right on City Walk in Canberra – during a quick work trip last spring, and honestly, it turned out to be a pretty solid find for what it is. I mean, it’s not your fancy hotel with a lobby and room service; it’s more like crashing at a mate’s place, but with your own space. The address is 222 City Walk, smack in the middle of the Civic area, which is great if you’re into that buzz without being overwhelmed. I arrived around dusk after a drive from Sydney – parking was a bit of a hassle, as it’s mostly street spots or those paid garages nearby, but I snagged one just off Bunda Street for like 10 bucks overnight. Check-in was casual; the host, Dana, met me at the door with keys and a quick rundown – no front desk drama, which was refreshing after a long day. The duplex itself has this lived-in vibe, with wooden floors that creak a little underfoot and that faint, homey smell of fresh laundry mixed with whatever’s cooking in the shared kitchen. It’s rated about 7.7, which feels spot-on – comfortable, but nothing extravagant.
What really sold me was how it fits right into Canberra’s low-key scene. The room itself is cozy, with a queen bed that was surprisingly comfy (those pillows were plush, I slept like a log), a small desk for if you’re working remotely, and your own bathroom – no sharing that, thank goodness. But yeah, it’s shared with a couple other rooms in the duplex, so you might hear the occasional door slam or chatter from the living area, especially in the evenings when folks are winding down. I remember whipping up a quick brekkie in the kitchen one morning – it’s got all the basics, like a microwave and coffee maker – and chatting with another guest from Melbourne about the best spots around. Location-wise, you’re steps from the Canberra Centre for shopping or grabbing a flat white at one of those hip cafes in Braddon, just a short walk north. And if you’re into the sights, Lake Burley Griffin is like a 15-minute stroll away – I went for a jog there at sunrise, and it was dead quiet, no crowds like in busier seasons. Oh, and fair warning: if you’re here in summer, the place can get a tad warm without central air, but there’s a fan that does the trick. It’s a 3-star setup, so expectations managed – clean, functional, with free Wi-Fi that actually held up for streaming.
All in all, I’d recommend Dana if you’re traveling solo or on a budget and want that authentic Canberra feel without the hotel markup. It’s not perfect – the shared aspect means it’s quieter during weekdays but could feel lively on weekends with other guests – but for the price, it’s a gem. You get to live like a local, popping out to Glebe Park for a picnic or hitting up the markets on Northbourne Avenue. If you’re after luxury, look elsewhere, but for a no-fuss base to explore the capital? Yeah, it worked wonders for me. Next time I’m in town for the Floriade festival in September, I’d book it again in a heartbeat.

What could be improved: All goodPerfect location for short stay with things to do in city center. – Mark from United States – 6 March 2024 (9/10)
The location was perfect for my needs. The central location meant I could walk to all the places I needed to get to.
What could be improved: Shared kitchen and bathroom and living room with another apartment. The fridge was already quite full when I arrived so other guests were obviously longer term guests. I never spent any time in the kitchen or living room areas and did not use the fridge.Good location and sharing the accommodation was useful – Christine from United Kingdom – 28 October 2022 (8/10)
Good central location and easily accessible to get picked up for trip.
What could be improved: Obtaining the key was awkward to see the numbers for the combination lock, but the keypad seemed awkward at first too. Required prior knowledge of how to use a digital lock but was sorted easily with a phone call.Very good – Ching from Taiwan – 30 March 2025 (8/10)
Great location, clean, great view from the room!
What could be improved: Be aware that others' bathroom habits may cause inconvenience in sharing bathroomVery good – Rhonda from Australia – 13 January 2025 (8/10)
The location was fantastic and great value for money.
Host and I kept quite different hours so was quite private.
What could be improved: The booking.com page says the whole entire place is yours and the confirmation email says your apartment is confirmed so was a bit confused that it was only a very small room. For the price I was still happy.Great location, value for money and had a nice stay – Balagopal from Australia – 12 August 2024 (8/10)
Great location and very good value for money. Would love to stay there if it is available on the days of my next travel
What could be improved: nothing much I would be asking specifically for value for moneyVery good – Mia from Australia – 18 February 2024 (8/10)
The location was super convenient! Having my own air con in the private room was definitely useful and appreciated on some of they days!
