Hotel Description

You know, I stumbled upon Dana – that’s the spot at 222 City Walk in Canberra’s bustling Civic area – during a quick work trip last spring, and honestly, it turned out to be a pretty solid pick for what it is. It’s not your fancy hotel vibe; think more like crashing in a mate’s spare room in a shared two-bedroom apartment. I mean, the name says it all: “Dana-Spacious Private Room in Shared 2-Bedroom Apartment-1.” Pulled up around lunchtime on a weekday, and finding parking was a bit of a hassle – City Walk’s right in the thick of things, with all those cafes and shops spilling out onto the street, so yeah, circle the block a few times or grab a spot in the nearby Canberra Centre garage if you’re driving. The host, Dana (I assume that’s where the name comes from), was super chill about check-in; she buzzed me up, handed over a key, and gave a quick tour – no frills, just straightforward. The building’s got that modern apartment feel, with clean lines and a lift that doesn’t creak like some older places around here. Stepping inside, there’s this faint smell of fresh coffee from the shared kitchen – someone must’ve brewed a pot that morning – and it immediately felt lived-in, in a good way, you know?

What really sold me was the room itself – spacious is right; it’s got a queen bed that’s comfy enough, though the mattress is on the firmer side, which suited my back after a long flight from Sydney. Big windows let in heaps of natural light, overlooking the pedestrian buzz below, but fair warning, it can get noisy in the evenings when folks hit the bars on Bunda Street, just a stone’s throw away. The shared bits are what make or break it: the bathroom’s spotless, with hot water that doesn’t run out mid-shower (a miracle in some budget spots), and the kitchen’s kitted out with basics like a microwave and fridge – I whipped up a quick brekkie one morning using stuff from the nearby Coles supermarket. It’s a 3-star setup with a 7.3 rating, so don’t expect luxury; the Wi-Fi’s reliable but not lightning-fast, and there’s no air-con, but Canberra’s autumn chill meant I didn’t miss it. Oh, and if you’re sharing with strangers (which I was – a quiet couple in the other room), it’s fine as long as everyone’s respectful; we barely crossed paths, but I could hear the occasional door slam from the hallway. Little details like that matter when you’re traveling solo – it felt safe, though, with a secure entry and the host on speed dial.

All in all, if you’re after a no-nonsense base in the heart of Canberra without blowing your budget, this place is worth considering, especially during quieter off-seasons like winter when the city’s museums and Lake Burley Griffin paths are less crowded. You’re steps from Glebe Park for a morning jog, or a short walk to the National Gallery – I popped over one afternoon and it was brilliant. Sure, it’s not perfect; the shared aspect might feel a tad awkward if you’re super private, and the decor’s basic (think IKEA vibes), but for the price, it’s authentic Canberra living. I’d go back for a weekend getaway – beats those sterile chain hotels on Northbourne Avenue, you know? Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

Reviews

  • Perfect spot for the event we were attending – Vanessa from Australia – 8 March 2025 (8/10)

It is clean and neat and value for money

What could be improved: The door code is very temperamental

  • Convenient, Central Location but Basic Stay – Yivan from Australia – 24 October 2024 (8/10)

This accommodation is all about convenience—right in the heart of Canberra, central to everything, making it ideal if you just need a place to sleep. However, if you're looking for somewhere to relax and unwind, this probably isn't the best choice. It's great for a quick, no-frills stay but not the place to chill in peace. I’d stay here again only if I needed a basic spot to rest during a busy trip.

  • Very good – Allen from Australia – 18 November 2023 (8/10)

  • Modern Private Rooms Canberra CBD. – Andrew from Australia – 2 October 2023 (7/10)

Proximity to City Centre. Was clean, self contained with kitchen and all the appliances.

What could be improved: Poor tv reception with limited channels. View from balcony into carpark and rubbish dumpsters.Toilet not separate from shower which makes it awkward when you are sharing facilities.

  • fair close to amenities – David from Australia – 20 April 2023 (6/10)

    location

What could be improved: was unable access balcony due other occupants washing drying

  • Not too bad – Warren from Australia – 8 November 2024 (7/10)

A great location, right in the heart of the CBD. Decent instructions were given on where to find access keys, and what codes to use to unlock doors. A fair room, with good space. The adjustable desk was also good.

What could be improved: The wardrobe lacks hanging room for certain clothes. There were no instructions given on what to do with used towels and bed linen. When I left the unit to go into the corridor to the lifts, I could always open the front door after stepping out, so I could never tell if the unit door was locked – and therefore secure.

  • It was generally OK – Jan from Poland – 22 September 2023 (8/10)

    Location

What could be improved: very loud noise – the building next door was being renovated,
the room was dark and shapeless, there was no access to the terrace, where washed bed linen was constantly displayed.

  • Great position – Vladimira from Australia – 29 November 2024 (7/10)

    Location

    What could be improved: Parking

  • Ideal room for weekender – Bridget from Australia – 2 May 2025 (9/10)

Prime location in the centre of town. Very easy to get around. The room is modern and had more space than I was expecting

What could be improved: We extended our booking one night and I got a call from the staff during the day who were not aware of the change. It was all good in the end though.

  • Exceptional – Mazin from Australia – 7 March 2025 (10/10)

The room is very very clean and in a very clean and beautiful apartment in the heart of Canberra city.
