Hotel Description
You know, when I first pulled up to the Metropol on Cooyong Street in Canberra’s CBD, I was honestly a bit skeptical – it’s right in the thick of things, smack between the bustle of Civic and that trendy Braddon area with all its cafes, and I thought, great, another noisy city spot. But man, it surprised me. The building’s got this modern, unpretentious vibe, not too flashy, and checking in was a breeze – the staff were these laid-back Aussies who sorted everything out in like five minutes, even hooked me up with tips on where to grab a decent flat white nearby (pro tip: try the little joint on Lonsdale Street, it’s a local favorite and way better than the tourist traps around the lake). Parking’s a bit of a squeeze in the underground garage – especially if you’re driving something bigger than a sedan – but once you’re in, it’s all good. The place feels secure, too, with that quiet hum of the city outside but not overwhelming, you know? I stayed during a mild autumn week, and honestly, the evenings were peaceful enough that I could hear the faint rustle of leaves from the nearby parks without any of that constant traffic drone you get in bigger cities like Sydney.
What really sets the Metropol apart, though – and this is coming from someone who’s crashed in a fair few Canberra spots – is how it’s geared for groups without feeling like a cramped share house. Our suite slept seven comfortably, with these big, airy rooms that had proper king beds (not those flimsy pull-outs) and a kitchenette that actually worked – I mean, we whipped up brekkie one morning with eggs from the nearby markets, and it smelled amazing, all fresh and homey against the crisp linen sheets. The CBD pool is a gem, too; it’s not huge, but it’s heated and overlooks the street with these potted palms that give it a sort of tropical oasis feel amid the urban grit. We splashed around after a day wandering to Lake Burley Griffin – which is just a 10-minute stroll away, by the way, perfect for catching those golden hour sunsets over the water. Oh, and the bathrooms? Spotless, with those rain showerheads that make you linger a bit too long. It’s not perfect, mind you – the Wi-Fi dipped out once during peak evening hours when everyone’s streaming, and the decor’s a tad generic in spots, like those beige walls that could use a pop of color – but for a 4-star joint with an 8.5 rating, it punches above its weight. Plus, being so central means you’re steps from Parliament House tours or even a quick jaunt to the National Gallery if that’s your thing.
All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra with a crew – family, mates, whatever – I’d say book the Metropol without overthinking it. It’s got that sweet spot of convenience without the pretension, and waking up to the smell of coffee brewing while gazing out at the CBD skyline? Yeah, that’s the kind of memory that sticks. Just pack light if you’re using the elevators during busy check-out times in summer, when the place fills up with conference folks. Trust me, it’s worth it for the no-fuss vibes and that poolside chill after exploring the capital’s underrated charms.
