You know, when I rolled into Canberra last autumn for a quick work trip mixed with some sightseeing, I wasn’t expecting much from a place called Metropolitan 70 – sounds a bit generic, right? But honestly, pulling up to 70/2 Edinburgh Ave in Acton, right near the ANU campus, it felt like I’d stumbled into one of those understated gems that locals rave about over coffee at Mocan & Green Grout down the street. The building’s got this sleek, modern vibe without trying too hard – think clean lines and big windows that let in that crisp Canberra light. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were all smiles, no fuss with paperwork, and they even hooked me up with a room upgrade because it was a quiet midweek stay. Parking’s a godsend here – they’ve got secure spots underground, which is clutch in a city where street parking can be a nightmare, especially around rush hour when all the public servants are commuting from Civic.

What really sold me, though, was how the place balances comfort with that effortless cool factor. My room on the third floor overlooked Edinburgh Ave, and let me tell you, waking up to the soft hum of morning traffic mixed with birds from the nearby lake – Lake Burley Griffin is just a 10-minute stroll away – was oddly peaceful. The bed was plush, like sinking into a cloud after a day hiking Black Mountain (pro tip: pack good shoes if you’re heading there), and the bathroom had these heated floors that were a lifesaver in the chilly evenings. Amenities-wise, there’s a decent gym and a small pool that’s perfect for laps if you’re into that – I mean, it’s not huge, but it beats nothing, and it’s usually empty early mornings. Food’s solid too; the on-site cafe does a mean flat white and avo toast, though if you’re craving more, wander over to NewActon for spots like Monster Kitchen or Akiba – they’re literally around the corner. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can get spotty during peak times, like when everyone’s streaming after dinner, but hey, it’s Canberra, not Silicon Valley, so I just switched to my phone’s hotspot and called it good. Oh, and the air con is whisper-quiet, which is a relief because the avenue can get a bit noisy on weekends when uni students are out.

All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra – say, for a Parliament House tour or just to escape Sydney’s hustle – Metropolitan 70 is the kind of 4-star spot that feels way more premium than its price tag suggests, especially with that 9.2 rating that’s well-earned. It’s not flashy, but it’s thoughtful, you know? Like, they stock the mini-fridge with local beers from Bentspoke Brewery, which was a nice touch after a long day. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in spring when the cherry blossoms are out and the whole area blooms. Just book ahead if it’s Floriade season; things fill up fast. Trust me, it’s the perfect base for exploring without the pretension.

  The apartment is super modern, a little hard to get used to the technology but fun when we worked it out. The QR codes don't give information about the pool area, we had to find it for ourselves after a lot of work. It's a beautiful apartment though, great kitchen setup, has everything you need.

  The apartment is clean, well maintained and appointed.
  
  What could be improved: 4 out of the 5 remote controls didn’t work. The remaining remote was very sketchy. The main bedroom bed head lights randomly turned on and off by themselves at 12.30am and wouldn’t stop and the blind went up and down when no one was touching the controls.
  It was extremely frustrating and instead of having a relaxing holiday we had to battle the technology.
  I had to go and buy a plug for the bath.
