Hotel Description

So, I ended up booking this spot called the Modern Boutique CBD 2BR 1st Floor Apt on Currong Street South in Canberra – you know, that quiet little pocket in Reid, just a stone’s throw from the lake and all the action in Civic. Honestly, I was a bit skeptical at first because it’s only a 3-star setup with a 7.9 rating, but after a long drive from Sydney, pulling up to number 35 felt like a relief. The building’s got that understated modern vibe – think clean lines, a bit of exposed brick in the lobby area (which is basically just a secure entryway), and no fuss with a doorman or anything. Check-in was a breeze; they use a key code system, so I didn’t have to deal with anyone at odd hours. I arrived around dusk in winter, and the street was dead quiet – no surprise, since Reid’s more residential than the bustling bits of Braddon across the way. Parking? There’s street spots nearby, but watch out for the timed zones during the day; I snagged one right out front after circling once or twice.

What really won me over was the apartment itself – it’s on the first floor, which means easy access (no lugging bags up stairs, thank goodness), but yeah, you do hear the occasional car humming by on Currong, especially in the mornings when folks are heading to work near the War Memorial. The two bedrooms are cozy, with those plush queen beds that actually feel supportive after a day of traipsing around Parliament House – I mean, it’s only a 15-minute walk from here, past Glebe Park where locals jog or picnic on weekends. The living area opens up nicely to a small balcony overlooking a leafy courtyard; nothing flashy, but the fresh eucalyptus scent wafting in from the nearby trees made it feel authentically Canberran, you know? Kitchen’s fully kitted out – I whipped up brekkie with eggs from the IGA down on Ainslie Avenue, which is like a five-minute stroll. It’s boutique in that hip, minimalist way: exposed concrete accents, soft linen curtains that block out the early sun (Canberra mornings can be brutal in summer), and a bathroom with rain shower that steams up just right. Sort of a downside, though – the Wi-Fi dipped a couple times during peak evening hours, probably because it’s shared or something, but it sorted itself out quick enough for streaming.

All in all, if you’re after a no-nonsense base for exploring Canberra without breaking the bank, this place hits the spot – especially for families or couples who want space to spread out. It’s not luxury-level polished (the coffee machine could use an upgrade, honestly), but for a quick getaway in shoulder season like autumn, when the leaves turn and the city’s less crowded, it’s solid value. I’d go back – heck, next time I’m thinking of timing it for Floriade, since you’re basically walking distance to Commonwealth Park. Just pack earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, and you’ll be golden.

  • Enjoyable because of family wedding and the places we visited. – Thomas from Australia – 26 October 2023 (8/10)

What could be improved: I didn;t like the fact that Booking .com allowed someone to access my credit card to book on the same dates to travel to the seychelles. What is your reason for that to happen?

  • Very good. The only down side was the seating in longe dining Ares was not really comfy. – Ian from Australia – 11 October 2023 (9/10)

    Every thing

What could be improved: Parking and more comfortable seating in lounge area

  • Great in every way, apart from the neighbour below. – Rachel from Australia – 5 October 2023 (8/10)

    Clean and conveniently located.

What could be improved: The neighbour below kept banging on their ceiling with what sounded like a broom, despite us not making an excessive amount of noise. Really detracted from the stay as we were so conscious of not making any noise. The owner of the rental didn’t respond when I messaged them to make them aware.

  • A very enjoyable stay, recommended – Anthony from Australia – 23 September 2023 (8/10)

Very clean and well prepared property

What could be improved: No off street parking and the parking around the property is a permit zone
