I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name Modern Comfort in Canberra’s City Center – Hosted by Canstay, I thought it sounded a bit corporate, you know? But after staying there, I get it. Sometimes the straightforward names are the most accurate ones.

The thing about this place is that it really nails that sweet spot between feeling like you’re in the heart of everything without the chaos that usually comes with city center accommodations. I mean, you’re literally walking distance from all the main government buildings and museums, but when you’re inside, it’s surprisingly quiet. The hosts at Canstay clearly know what they’re doing – they’ve managed to create these spaces that feel genuinely comfortable rather than just checking boxes on some hospitality checklist. What struck me most was how they’ve furnished everything with actual thought behind it. The beds are properly comfortable (not just hotel-firm), and there’s enough space to actually unpack your stuff, which honestly makes such a difference when you’re staying more than a night or two.

The location really works in your favor here. Canberra gets a bad rap sometimes for being sleepy, but staying right in the city center, you realize there’s actually plenty happening – you just need to know where to look. You can walk to Civic in about ten minutes, and if you’re into the whole political tourism thing, Parliament House is an easy drive or bus ride away. I appreciated that the hosts include local tips that go beyond the obvious tourist spots. They pointed me toward some genuinely good coffee places that I never would have found otherwise, and suggested timing for visiting the national galleries when they’re less crowded. The check-in process was refreshingly smooth too – none of that awkward key handoff drama you sometimes get with hosted accommodations. They’re responsive without being hovering, which is exactly what you want. The space itself has that lived-in comfort that makes you feel like you’re staying in someone’s well-appointed spare room rather than a sterile rental. With a 9.1 rating, it’s clearly working for other people too, and I can see why. It’s the kind of place that makes you think Canberra might be more interesting than you initially assumed – and honestly, that’s worth something.

  The location is excellent—very close to the center of Canberra.
  The room was spacious, very clean, and situated in a quiet, comfortable environment.
  
  What could be improved: The key pickup and return location is a bit far from the accommodation.

  We had to drive to a locked box, about 5 minutes from the hotel, to get the keys.
  Then when we checked out we had to drive back to put the keys back in the locked box.
  Lots of road works as new tram lines are being put in.This added to the stress of getting the keys.
  The hotel room was very nice and comfortable.The parking however, was challenging.We had been warned that it was many floors down,but the corners are quite tight as well.
  
  What could be improved: the car park and retrieving (and returning)the keys in another location.

  Like-new decor, well equipped kitchen, laundry and cosy furnishings. Books and games, although unused, were a nice homey touch.
  
  What could be improved: Proximity of key collection location to property slightly further away than ideal, especially having to return keys to same place during check out.
