Hotel Description

You know, I ended up at the Nesuto Canberra on a whim during a road trip through the ACT last spring – it’s right there on Akuna Street, smack in the middle of Civic, which is basically Canberra’s beating heart without all the pretentious vibes you get in bigger cities. I mean, pulling up after a long drive from Sydney, the place didn’t scream luxury from the outside – it’s this modern-ish tower block that blends in with the surrounding apartments and offices – but honestly, that made it feel more like a local’s spot than some glossy tourist trap. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these friendly Aussies who chatted about the best spots for brekkie nearby, like that little cafe on Bunda Street where you can grab a flat white and watch the morning joggers head towards Lake Burley Griffin. Oh, and parking? They have an underground garage, which is a godsend because street parking in Civic can be a nightmare, especially on weekends when everyone’s flocking to the markets or the galleries.

What really won me over, though, was how the rooms felt like a proper home base – I had one of those apartment-style suites with a full kitchenette, which meant I could whip up my own meals instead of relying on overpriced room service (pro tip: stock up at the Coles in the Canberra Centre, just a five-minute walk away). The bed was comfy enough, with those crisp white sheets that smell faintly of fresh laundry, and the balcony overlooked the street below – a bit noisy in the evenings with the hum of traffic and distant chatter from pubs on London Circuit, but nothing earplugs couldn’t handle. I actually spent a quiet afternoon by the indoor pool, which is heated and surprisingly uncrowded, even during peak tourist season in October when the Floriade festival draws crowds. It’s not perfect, mind you – the decor’s a tad dated, like early 2000s vibes with those beige carpets that could use a refresh, and the Wi-Fi dipped out a couple times during my Zoom calls – but for a 4-star spot with a 7.7 rating, it punches above its weight. Plus, being so close to the National Portrait Gallery (literally a 10-minute stroll) meant I could pop out for culture without planning my whole day around it.

All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for work or a family getaway – say, exploring the War Memorial or just chilling by the lake – Nesuto’s a solid pick that won’t break the bank. It’s got that practical edge for longer stays, with laundry facilities and space to spread out, and you feel connected to the real city pulse without being overwhelmed. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the cooler months when the fog rolls in off the Brindabellas and makes everything feel a bit magical. Just pack light layers – Canberra weather’s fickle like that.
