Ovolo Nishi Overview
First Impressions
Walking into Ovolo Nishi feels like stepping into someone’s incredibly stylish — and slightly eccentric — private residence. This five-star property on Edinburgh Avenue doesn’t try to impress you with marble lobbies or gold fixtures. Instead, it hits you with bold art installations and furniture that looks like it belongs in a design magazine. I mean, where else can you find a luxury hotel that’s actually built into a working apartment complex? It’s unconventional, sure, but that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
Location & Neighborhood
You know what’s brilliant about this spot in Canberra? You’re literally next to the Australian National University, which means the area has this vibrant, intellectual energy that most hotel districts lack. The location gets an 8.7 rating from couples, and honestly, I get it — there’s something romantic about wandering through the nearby cultural precinct after dinner. Lake Burley Griffin is just a short walk away, and if you’re into art (which you should be, staying here), the National Gallery is practically on your doorstep. Plus, being in NewActon means you’ve got some genuinely interesting cafes and bars within stumbling distance.
The Room Experience
Here’s where things get interesting — each room feels like a curated art experience rather than just a place to sleep. The beds are phenomenally comfortable (guests rave about this, and they’re not wrong), but what really catches your attention are the locally-sourced art pieces and the floor-to-ceiling windows. Some rooms have these amazing views over the lake, while others look out onto the university campus. The bathrooms are sleek without being cold, and there’s this attention to detail that makes you notice things — like how the lighting actually flatters you, or how the kitchenette setup feels genuinely useful rather than decorative.
Dining & Social Spaces
The Monster Kitchen & Bar downstairs isn’t just your typical hotel restaurant — it’s become a destination for Canberra locals, which tells you something. The menu changes seasonally, and they’re serious about using regional ingredients. What I love is that it never feels stuffy despite the luxury setting. You’ll see university professors having coffee next to visiting politicians, and somehow it all works. The bar area spills out into this courtyard space that’s perfect for those surprisingly warm Canberra evenings. Actually, the whole ground floor has this community feel that most high-end hotels completely miss.
Why Guests Love It
There’s a reason this place has so many repeat visitors — it’s not trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, it does this one thing really well: creating a space that feels both sophisticated and genuinely welcoming. The staff seem to actually enjoy working here (you’d be surprised how rare that is), and there’s this sense that the hotel trusts its guests to appreciate something a bit different. If you’re the type of traveler who gets excited about staying somewhere with personality rather than just luxury for luxury’s sake, Ovolo Nishi delivers. Plus, having your own parking spot in central Canberra is worth its weight in gold — trust me on this one.
The luxury concierge service in Canberra secures helicopter hops over Namadgi, behind-the-scenes gallery walk-throughs, and truffle banquets in the Brindabellas.

Reviews of Ovolo Nishi
Very good – Michael from Australia – 9 July 2025 (8/10)
good location
What could be improved: rooms a bit darkGood vibe, comfortable bed – Anlan from Australia – 7 July 2025 (9/10)
Fancy building, comfortable bed
What could be improved: 1. There is no buffet breakfast, which is disappointing
2. The breakfast menu is very basic, any cafe nearby may have better options
3. I waited 20min for the breakfast I ordered, I don’t understand why it took so long
4. There is no free parking. There is a parking lot downstairs but it’s Wilson parking it should be hotel parking instead
5. The lighting of the room is a bit too dark. When I woke up in the morning, the lighting made me feel like it’s still at nightExceptional in every way – Margaret from Australia – 23 June 2025 (9/10)
I have stayed at 4 different Ovolo hotels on several occasions and am continually blown away with the exceptional service the staff deliver.

What could be improved: Everything was fineGood – Lúcás from Australia – 31 May 2025 (7/10)
Great location, nicely decorated and good atmosphere
What could be improved: Dining options overpriced, no early breakfast or coffee. No space or desk to write in my room.Good – Emma from Australia – 27 May 2025 (7/10)
Amazing deco, comfy beds, great mini bar.
What could be improved: Room was noisy as next to the freeway. But we do love the quirkiness about the hotel rooms are super comfortable have stayed there several times now great hote – Wendy from Australia – 20 May 2025 (9/10)
Love the atrium room so peaceful quiet
Love restaurant
What could be improved: Someone had been smoking in one of room as we are non smokers we really noticed the smellParking troubles – Steve from Australia – 8 May 2025 (8/10)
What could be improved: The hotel charges for parking, but availability isn’t guaranteed — a detail that wasn’t clearly communicated. I parked in a spot I believed was designated for hotel guests, only to be confronted by the property owner who claimed otherwise and came close to damaging my vehicle. A stressful and avoidable situation. Clearer signage and upfront info about parking restrictions would really help.
Fabulous stay – Yasmin from Australia – 3 May 2025 (9/10)
Loved the bath tub, the beds were comfortable. The staff were lovely. The decor and interior design was very trendy.
We had 2 enjoyable nights in this hotel which we'd never stayed at before. – Paul from Australia – 24 April 2025 (8/10)
Breakfast was delicious; dinner very nice. Hotel very quiet.
What could be improved: Dinner menu could've been larger, not a lot to choose from. Lighting in bathroom not good for putting make-up on.
