Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon the Pretty Penthouse when I was in Canberra last spring for a conference at ANU – it’s literally a stone’s throw from the campus, right on Gordon Street in that quiet pocket of Acton. I mean, if you’re studying or working there, you could roll out of bed and be at lectures in under 10 minutes, which is a godsend during those foggy mornings when the lake mist rolls in from Burley Griffin. Pulling up, the building doesn’t scream luxury from the outside – it’s one of those modern apartment-style spots that blends into the neighborhood, with a secure entry that feels more like a upscale condo than a hotel. Check-in was a breeze; the host met me at the door with keys and a quick rundown, no fussing around a lobby or anything. Honestly, after a long drive from Sydney, that personal touch was refreshing – though fair warning, if you’re arriving late, coordinate ahead because it’s not 24/7 staffed like the big chains downtown.
Stepping inside my penthouse suite, though – wow, it lives up to the name. The place is spacious, with these huge floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the living area with natural light, and you get killer views over the treetops toward the uni grounds (on a clear day, you can even spot the Black Mountain Tower poking up). The decor’s got that chic, minimalist vibe – think soft gray linens on the king bed, a kitchenette stocked with decent appliances (I whipped up a quick brekkie using the Nespresso machine, which was a nice perk), and a bathroom that smells faintly of eucalyptus from the complimentary toiletries. It’s rated 4 stars, and it earns it with little details like the fluffy robes and the balcony where I sipped coffee while watching joggers on the paths below – Canberra’s got that crisp, clean air that just invigorates you, you know? But it’s not flawless; the Wi-Fi can be spotty during peak hours when everyone’s online (hello, student rush), and while parking’s available in the underground garage, it’s a bit tight for bigger cars – I had to maneuver my SUV like I was playing Tetris. Noise-wise, it’s pretty peaceful, especially mid-week when the city’s not buzzing with tourists flocking to Parliament House or the War Memorial. Oh, and if you’re there in summer, crank the AC early because those windows let in a lot of heat.
All in all, I’d totally recommend the Pretty Penthouse if you’re after something more intimate than the chain hotels along Northbourne Avenue – it’s got that homey feel without skimping on comfort, and at an 8 rating, it’s solid value for what you get in pricey Canberra. Whether you’re a solo traveler crashing after exploring the National Gallery or a couple wanting a base near the action (ANU’s cafes are just around the corner on Childers Street for that morning flat white), it hits the spot. Just pack light – the elevator’s reliable, but stairs might be your friend if it’s busy. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you actually lived a slice of local life, not just passed through.
