You know, when I rolled into Canberra last autumn – right around that crisp time when the leaves are turning and the air has that fresh, eucalyptus tang – I wasn’t expecting much from this spot called Roomy 2BR 2BA City-Centre Apt, hosted by CanStay. I mean, it’s tucked away in the 2612 postcode, which puts it smack in Turner, just a stone’s throw from the hustle of Northbourne Avenue. Driving up, I remember circling for parking – it’s street parking mostly, and it can get tricky during peak hours when everyone’s commuting into Civic, but honestly, I snagged a spot without too much drama. Check-in was a breeze; the host from CanStay left the keys in a lockbox with clear instructions via app, no awkward front desk chit-chat. Stepping inside, it felt like walking into a mate’s well-kept flat – spacious, with high ceilings that make the place breathe, and these big windows overlooking a quiet leafy street. There’s a faint hum from distant traffic, but nothing that kept me up; actually, it was surprisingly peaceful at night, especially compared to the noisier bits near Braddon where the bars spill out.

What really sold me on this apartment – and yeah, it’s more like a serviced rental than a stuffy hotel – was how lived-in and practical it felt for a longer stay. Two bedrooms, two baths, all decked out with modern fittings: think plush queen beds with those crisp white linens that smell faintly of lavender detergent, and a kitchen that’s fully stocked – I whipped up brekkie using the local produce from the nearby Capital Region Farmers Market on Saturdays. The living area has this comfy sectional sofa where I crashed after a day wandering Lake Burley Griffin (it’s like a 15-minute stroll away, perfect for catching the sunset over the water). Oh, and the Wi-Fi is solid – streamed a few episodes without a hitch, which is a godsend if you’re working remotely like I was. Minor gripe? The second bathroom’s shower pressure is a bit meh, sort of like it’s saving water the eco way, but hey, Canberra’s all about that sustainable vibe anyway. And if you’re into the food scene, you’re golden – pop over to Lonsdale Street in Braddon for killer coffee at Barrio or some craft brews; it’s walkable, even after a big meal.

Look, if you’re heading to Canberra for a mix of work and play – maybe hitting up Parliament House tours or just chilling by the lake – this place is a solid pick. It’s got that 4-star comfort without the corporate feel, and with an 8.8 rating, you can tell others agree. I left feeling like I’d found a little home base in the capital; not flashy, but reliable and roomy enough for a family or a couple of mates. Worth booking, especially in the quieter off-season when the city’s not swarming with pollies and tourists.

    Great apartment , well located within easy reach of most attractions. Fully equipped with great views Lots of restaurants nearby

    What could be improved: Access to the property is a bit challenging especially when it’s raining!

    The location of this apartment is unbeatable. So private and quiet!
    Everything is accessible , on foot in less than 15minutes.
    Plenty of cafes and restaurants at your doorstep.
    Uber access to local attractions is quite affordable.
    The apartment was clean and tidy, there were small touches that were very practical , making the stay stress free. Such as provision of a hair dryer in each bathroom, clothes washing detergent, bathroom supplies, a clothes steamer , clothes hanger and dishwasher tablets.

    The key box might have been a challenge but the host has thoughtfully done a you tube to explain it thoroughly.
    The location is in walking distance of many restaurants and bars. Free parking. Great views. Spacious unit. Responsive host.

    What could be improved: There was a coffee pod machine but no pods. Easily fixed as only $5 for 10 pods but would’ve been nice for the host to have provided a couple. Pillows may need replacing.

    Great Location with the added bonus of car parking particularly given the cost of parking in Canberra. The apartment is walking distance to supermarkets and there is a fantastic selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars again all in walking distance. The balcony is also a bonus for an afternoon drink or two.

    What could be improved: The one thing we did notice was how light the apartment is from around 5.00am did make for a long day but it was only a short stay – maybe I'd pack a sleep mask for next trip.

    What could be improved: The building should be safer. When trying to access the bin just before check-out, there was someone using hard drugs with the door open in the building's unisex toilet on the ground floor.
