Hotel Description
You know, when I first rolled up to this place on Gordon Street in Canberra – it’s Unit 5 at number 3, right in the heart of the 2601 postcode – I was honestly a bit skeptical. I’d just come from a long drive up from Sydney, and let’s face it, apartments billed as “spacious and sun-drenched” can sometimes feel like a stretch, especially in a city like Canberra where the winters bite hard. But pulling into that quiet residential spot, with easy street parking (no fighting for spots like you do in busier parts of Civic), I felt this immediate sense of calm. Check-in was a breeze – the host left a key in a lockbox, and there was even a little welcome note with tips on where to grab coffee nearby. Stepping inside, oh man, the light just pours in through these massive windows facing north, catching that crisp Australian sun all day long. It’s not one of those sterile hotel rooms; it feels lived-in, with soft wool rugs underfoot that muffle the outside world, and a faint scent of eucalyptus from the air freshener – or maybe that’s just the nearby parks seeping in.
What really sold me, though, was how central it is without the chaos. You’re literally a 10-minute walk from Lake Burley Griffin – I mean, I strolled over there one morning for a jog and watched the hot air balloons drifting up at dawn, which is such a Canberra thing if you’ve never seen it. The apartment itself is huge for a 4-star spot; there’s a full kitchen with all the gadgets (I whipped up brekkie using fresh produce from the Capital Region Farmers Market, just a short drive away in Exhibition Park), and the bedroom has this king bed that’s ridiculously comfy, like sinking into a cloud after a day exploring. Honestly, the balcony is a gem – overlooking a leafy street that’s dead quiet at night, except for the occasional magpie call in the mornings. It’s not perfect, mind you; the building’s a bit older, so the shower pressure can be hit or miss if you’re there during peak hours, and if you’re sensitive to light, those big windows mean you’ll want to draw the blinds early. But during my stay in spring, when the Floriade festival turns the city into a flower explosion, it was ideal – close enough to the action without the noise from Northbourne Avenue traffic keeping you up.
All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for work or just to soak up the capital vibes – maybe hitting up Parliament House or the National Gallery, both under 2km away – this apartment is a solid pick. It’s got that 9.1 rating for a reason; it’s practical, feels like a home base, and saves you a ton compared to those fancy hotels in the city center. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the quieter shoulder seasons when the crowds thin out and you can really unwind. Just pack light layers – Canberra’s weather can flip on you, you know?
