Hotel Description

You know, when I rolled into Canberra last spring – right around that crisp April weather when the leaves are turning all fiery red around Lake Burley Griffin – I wasn’t sure what to expect from Staying Places – The Avenue. It’s smack on Northbourne Avenue, which, if you’ve been to the capital before, you know is like the main artery running north-south, connecting the airport straight into the heart of Civic. Honestly, it’s a godsend if you’re driving in; I found parking right out front without much hassle, though it can get tight during peak hours when everyone’s commuting. The lobby hit me with this fresh, eucalyptus-scented vibe – subtle, not overpowering, like they’ve got some local essential oils diffusing or something. Check-in was a breeze; the staff were these friendly locals who chatted about the best spots for a flat white in nearby Braddon (pro tip: hit up Mocan & Green Grout if you’re into that artisanal coffee scene). My room on the third floor overlooked the avenue, but surprisingly, the double-glazed windows kept out most of the traffic hum – well, except for that occasional tram ding in the evenings, which sort of added to the urban charm, I guess.

What really won me over, though, was how the place balances that 4-star polish with a laid-back Aussie feel. The rooms are spacious, with these comfy king beds that actually feel like they’re made for a good night’s sleep after a day traipsing around the National Gallery or Parliament House – both just a quick 10-minute drive or even a brisk walk if you’re up for it. I loved the little touches, like the in-room Nespresso machine stocked with pods (saved me from subpar hotel coffee), and the bathroom had those rain showerheads that make you linger a bit too long. Breakfast in the on-site cafe was solid – think smashed avo on sourdough with poached eggs, nothing fancy but fresh and satisfying, especially if you’re fueling up for a hike in the nearby Brindabella Ranges. Oh, and if you’re traveling with a group or family, they’ve got these connecting suites that are perfect; I saw a few families using them, and it didn’t feel crowded at all. One minor gripe? The Wi-Fi can be spotty in the far corners of the building during busy times, like when conferences are on in town – but hey, that’s Canberra for you, with all the government types hogging the bandwidth. Still, for a 9.1 rating, it lives up to the hype without trying too hard.

All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for work or just to soak in the underrated capital vibes – maybe catching a show at the Canberra Theatre or wandering the markets in Kingston – this spot on Northbourne is a smart pick. It’s not some flashy resort, but it’s reliable, comfortable, and puts you right where the action is without the isolation of those outer suburb hotels. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially in the quieter off-season when the city’s got that peaceful hum. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like you actually experienced a slice of real Canberra life.

  • Great, stylish, and comfy accommodation centrally located near Canberra CBD – Michèle from Germany – 24 March 2025 (10/10)

The apartment "Beatrice" at The Avenue is located very conveniently, close to Jolimont Centre and within short walking distance of the CBD and ANU. This is why initially I chose this accommodation. On arrival, I was, however, pleasantly surprised that the apartment contained everything I could ask for, and more: a washing machine and dryer, a really comfy bed (which is not always the case), and it was very spacious! Also, Emmy is a very friendly and flexible host, providing tea, coffee, and milk, as well as some basic condiments. She also responds promptly to communication via the messenger, which is very reassuring.
I fully recommend this accommodation and will certainly be back!

What could be improved: I really cannot think of anything. Maybe the regular check-out time could be a bit later (it's 10 a.m.). But when I apologetically stated that I'd unfortunately be 30 minutes late, Emmy was absolutely lovely and said that wouldn't be a problem. So, everything was great!
