Hotel Description
You know, I stumbled upon Trieste Apartments Kingston during a quick getaway to Canberra last spring, and honestly, it was one of those spots that just clicks when you’re tired of the usual hotel grind. Pulling up to 3 Tench Street in Kingston – that’s that leafy suburb right on the edge of Lake Burley Griffin – I remember thinking how unassuming it looked from the outside, like a modern block of flats tucked away on a quiet residential street. No grand lobby or doorman fuss; instead, it was a straightforward self-check-in with a code they emailed ahead, which was a godsend after a long drive from Sydney. I mean, who wants to deal with queues when you’re hauling luggage? The place is rated 8.2 out of 10, and yeah, that feels about right – it’s solid four-star comfort without pretending to be flashy. My apartment (I went for a one-bedroom) had this cozy, lived-in vibe, with a full kitchen that smelled faintly of fresh herbs from whatever the previous guest had cooked up. The bed was plush, the kind that sinks just enough without swallowing you whole, and there was even a little balcony overlooking the treetops – perfect for sipping coffee while watching the morning joggers head toward the lake path.
What really sold me on Trieste, though, was how it felt like a proper base for exploring Canberra without the tourist trap feel. Kingston’s got that vibe, you know? It’s close enough to the Parliamentary Triangle – we’re talking a 10-minute drive to the National Gallery or Questacon – but far from the bustle of Civic. I loved wandering down to the Kingston Foreshore for brekkie; there’s this spot called Local Press with killer avocado toast and that crisp lakeside air that hits you first thing. The apartments themselves are well-kitted out – washer-dryer in the unit (lifesaver for longer stays), decent Wi-Fi that didn’t glitch during my Zoom calls, and parking right out front, though fair warning, it can get tight on weekends when the markets are on in nearby Manuka. Noise-wise, it’s pretty chill; Tench Street isn’t a main drag, so no traffic hum keeping you up, but I did hear the occasional dog bark from neighboring yards – nothing major, just a reminder you’re in a real neighborhood. Oh, and in winter, Canberra gets nippy, so the heating worked a treat, though the place could use thicker curtains to block that early sunrise light. Little things like that make it feel authentic, not some sterile chain.
All in all, if you’re heading to Canberra for work or just to soak up the capital’s underrated charm – think autumn leaves crunching underfoot or summer evenings by the lake – Trieste is a smart pick. It’s not perfect; the bathrooms are on the compact side, and housekeeping is every few days unless you request more, but for the price and that homey freedom (I whipped up pasta one night with groceries from the nearby IGA), it’s worth it. I’d go back in a heartbeat, especially over those overpriced spots in the city center. Trust me, it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local, even if you’re just passing through.
