First Impressions

Walking into the Crowne Plaza Canberra by IHG, you immediately get that feeling of being in the right place at the right time. The lobby has this understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard — polished but not intimidating. What struck me most was how the staff seemed genuinely pleased to see guests, not just going through the motions. You know what I mean? There’s something refreshing about a hotel where people actually want to help you figure out your day.

Location & Getting Around

Honestly, the location is probably the hotel’s biggest win. Sitting on Binara Street, you’re basically in the heart of everything that matters in Canberra without feeling like you’re trapped in tourist central. The Parliamentary Triangle is right there — I could walk to Parliament House in about fifteen minutes, and Lake Burley Griffin is even closer. What I really appreciated was having my own car sorted with the private parking (no hunting for street spots or paying ridiculous daily rates). Couples seem to get this location thing too — apparently they rate it over 9 out of 10, and I can see why.

The Room Experience

The rooms hit that sweet spot between business hotel functionality and actual comfort. I mean, you’ve got everything you need without feeling like you’re sleeping in an office. The beds are properly comfortable — not too soft, not too firm — and the blackout curtains actually work, which is more rare than it should be. The bathrooms are well-designed with decent water pressure, and there’s enough space to spread out your stuff without playing Tetris with your luggage. Little touches like good lighting for reading and plenty of power outlets show someone was thinking about how people actually use hotel rooms.

Breakfast & Dining

The buffet breakfast is one of those situations where you can tell they’re trying to do it right. It’s not just the usual sad continental spread — there are proper hot options, fresh fruit that’s actually fresh, and coffee that doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting around since yesterday. I found myself going back for seconds more often than I probably should have. The dining area gets busy around 8 AM, so if you’re not a morning person, you might want to aim for earlier or later to avoid the rush.

Here’s the thing that really sets this place apart — people keep coming back. There are apparently more repeat guests here than at most other hotels, and after staying here, I get it. It’s not about flashy amenities or over-the-top service; it’s about getting the fundamentals right consistently.   What could be improved: bathroom is very old. Hard too control the hot water, either too hot or too cold. The noise from next door’s bathroom as loud as thunderstorm. And you can hear the talking from next door and outdoor clearly.
