I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Crowne Plaza Canberra by IHG, I wasn’t expecting much from what looked like your typical business hotel exterior. But you know what? Sometimes these IHG properties surprise you, and this one definitely grew on me during my stay in Canberra.

The thing about staying in Australia’s capital is that you’re either there for work (like half the guests seemed to be) or you’re one of those people who actually wants to explore what Canberra has to offer – and honestly, there’s more than most people think. What I appreciated about this place was how it felt like the staff actually understood both types of travelers. The lobby has this sort of understated government-building elegance that works, and check-in was refreshingly quick even during what seemed like a busy parliamentary sitting week. The rooms themselves are spacious in that way that makes you remember how cramped some city hotels can be – I mean, I could actually open my suitcase flat on the floor without playing furniture Tetris.

Here’s what I really liked: the hotel sits in a spot where you can walk to some genuinely good spots that locals frequent, not just the obvious tourist traps. There’s this quiet efficiency to how everything runs that feels very Canberra, if that makes sense. The restaurant doesn’t try to be fancy, but they do a solid job with breakfast – and trust me, after a few days of hotel continental spreads, you start to notice when someone actually puts thought into the coffee and doesn’t just heat up pre-scrambled eggs. The fitness center was better equipped than I expected, though it gets busy around 7 AM with all the government workers trying to squeeze in a workout before meetings. Parking was straightforward, which matters more than you’d think when you’re navigating an unfamiliar city. One minor thing – the elevators are a bit slow, but I started taking the stairs and realized it was probably better for me anyway. The whole experience felt like staying somewhere that understands its role in the city without trying too hard to be something it’s not, which is exactly what you want when you’re exploring a place like Canberra.

  What could be improved: bathroom is very old. Hard too control the hot water, either too hot or too cold. The noise from next door’s bathroom as loud as thunderstorm. And you can hear the talking from next door and outdoor clearly.
